April – A Late Spring
Coming this week … our new baby chicks! They arrive at a day old and are ready for market in 6 to 8 weeks (May/June). There will be new flocks coming throughout the summer so free run, fresh frozen chickens will be for sale up until the fall and possibly till Christmas (unless sold out). You can pre-order whole chickens (4-5 lb.) anytime. We will also have them available at all our Farmers Market locations and through the Ottawa Valley Food Co-op.
Due to increased feed costs, the price of a dozen free run eggs will go up to $4.00 as of May 1. Remember that hard boiled farm fresh eggs have to be a few weeks old or the shells are difficult to remove.
We have started tomato and broccoli seedlings in the greenhouse. It may be cold outside but inside the greenhouse it’s 80 degrees! Cucumbers, butternut squash and zucchini are next to be planted.
The first five new calves have arrived and are getting lots of TLC. New ones will continue to be born throughout April and May. It’s always a thrill to see them first stand on their wobbly little legs.
Paddy will be taking care of our Deep River Market (every 2 weeks starting May 28) and Kathleen will be at Killaloe this summer. Margaret Ann will be serving customers at Pembroke Wednesdays only. Kevin will be at Barry’s Bay. Stay tuned for more news about other Farmers Markets.

We are all busy with markets and hay is being cut for winter feed.
We now have lovely brown hens that are laying fresh eggs daily. Come to pick up a dozen or two. If you want to hard boil these eggs you’ll have to wait a week or two or they will be hard to peel.
Greenhouse cucumbers are available and the first 2 red tomatoes were taste tested by the family. They passed!
More produce to come for sale starting next week.

It is here - sun is shining, sap is flowing.
We are currently helping our friends at LloMar Farm in the sugar bush. The sap is running and lots of maple syrup is already bottled.
Our cucumbers, squash, tomato seedlings are ready for transplanting to the greenhouse. We have covered the soil in the greenhouse to help get it warm for the little roots of the plants. Hopefully the cool nights won't set them back too much.
The barnyard is getting full - 9 new baby calves and more to come. Unfortunately, even with all the help we give the Moms, some babies just don't make it.
We will be at the new EASTER COBDEN FARMERS' MARKET APRIL 19. Come and visit!
